A gala preview ﬁve days earlier had been notable for the attendance of The Queen, to whom Sarah Brightman was presented as the wife of the composer: she and Andrew had married that morning. Acting as his muse through her clear soprano voice, Brightman herself performed in the next two of Lloyd Webber’s works. The ﬁrst was Requiem, a setting of the mass, dedicated to Bill Lloyd Webber: not only had he set an example through his own involvement with sacred music as composer and organist, but he had died in October 1982, just a few weeks after the New York opening of Cats.
